June Reading List Poll

In January and February, I ran two highly successful polls where I asked all the readers of the blog to help me pick my reading list for the following months. The first one was for novels, the second one for comics. I managed to meet the reading goals for the first of those polls, but am still progressing through the second one, mostly because I’ve been traveling a bit too much of late, and reading time has generally been at a premium due to work and more time devoted to my writing.

However, I should be done with it by the end of this month, so keep an eye out for updates on that.

In the meantime, here’s my next reading poll, and this one is for novels once again. Hit the break to find out more.

The novels up for consideration are the following:

  • Ninteen Galaxies: Recon One-Five by John C. Scott
  • Playing Tyler by T. L. Costa
  • Seven Eyes #1: Exile by Betsy Dornbusch
  • Shadows of the Apt #1: The Black and Gold by Adrian Tchaikovsky
  • Farseer #1: Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
  • Space Marine Battles: The Death of Antagonis by David Annandale
  • Wild Hunt #2: Trinity Rising by Elspeth Cooper
  • Egil & Nix #2: A Discourse in Steel by Paul S. Kemp
  • Billy Fox: Blind God’s Buff by Richard Lee Byers
  • Dawn of the Jedi: Into The Void by Tim Lebbon
  • Blood of Nagash #1: Neferata by Josh Reynolds
  • Star Trek: Cast No Shadow by James Swallow
  • Dire Earth Cycle #1: The Darwin Elevator by Jason M. Hough
  • Magic The Gathering – Planeswalker #1: Agents of Artifice by Ari Marmell
  • Eberron: The Shard Axe by Marsheila Rockwell
  • Eli Monpress #2: The Spirit Rebellion by Rachel Aaron
  • The Wall of Night #2: Gathering of the Lost by Helen Lowe
  • Seven Suns #1: The Hidden Empire by Kevin J. Anderson
  • Spiritwalker #2: Cold Fire by Kate Elliott
  • Penance by Dan O’Shea

Here are the guidelines for the polling:

  • It will run for 2 weeks from the 15th May to midnight 31st May.
  • 20 options on the list. You can vote for up to 7 options. I recommend using all 7 choices.
  • I will pick the top 8 at the end of the month.
  • I will pick a further 2 options at random from the remaining choices, for a total of 10 choices.
  • Be sure to leave a comment as to why you picked a certain book (or books). Reading the comments on the previous polls, whether on the blog or on social media, was one of the highlights and I definitely want to keep that going.

Once the polling is done, the reading list will go live on 1st June, and I will also review each of the ten books that are picked by you, the readers of this blog. I cannot make any promises to be on-time with the reviews but rest assured that they will be done.

So, have at it, and keep your comments flowing!

Remember, there are 20 options and you can vote for up to 7 of them, so use all 7 choices!

  1. I voted for the Jim Swallow Star Trek one because, even though I’m not a Star Trek guy, I heard him talk a bit about it on a podcast recently, and it sounded interesting.

  5. I like the Star Wars:Into The Void listed instead as Star Trek: Into The Void. The first Star Trek/Star Wars crossover novel, apparently. That got my vote. 😉

  6. T.L. Costa’s Playing Tyler is an awesome read; ADD-rattled, vid-game-genius protag coping with sinister mystery surrounding govt. drone program. Yeah, I’ll say it: “ripped from the headlines.” But digs much deeper than that. (disclaimer: she & I share a publisher)

    • Ain’t that bit funny 😀 I read Zenn Scarlett already. Pretty damn good. Its like an SF version of a magical fairy tale, of sorts. Looking forward to reading Playing Tyler.

  7. Love the fact that when I reblogged it, Recon’s cover is huge and the rest are small! Bwahahahahaha!!!!!!

  8. I picked Ari Marmell, Paul S Kemp and Richard Lee Byers. They have always offered me great stories no matter what the world they are writing in, the rest are mostly chosen by name of book/art. Tho Kevin J Anderson is also good and Star wars novels are usually at least a solid read.

    • I’ve read Paul’s work across three settings, and I’ve loved all of it – Star Wars: Deception, Forgotten Realms: Erevis Cale Trilogy, and his first Egil and Nix novel. Fantastic stuff. The only book from RLB I’ve read is his book in the War of the Spider Queen double trilogy. Thought it was arite. With Ari, I’ve read his two Widdershins novels, and his Darksiders tie-in. Darksiders was just plain awesome.

  10. I voted for Gathering of the Lost, by Helen Lowe, and Assassin’s Apprentice, by Robin Hobb. Why? Well, I’ve read Assassin’s Apprentice, so your review of that will be my ‘control’ for your review of Gathering of the Lost! Happy reading 🙂

The only one I’ve read and can recommend with confidence is The Wall of Night #2: Gathering of the Lost by Helen Lowe. You will get lost (see what I did there?) in her world.

  12. I voted for The Gathering of the Lost, as Helen Lowe is the only author I know here 🙂 (sorry, everyone else, but I don’t get much time to read at present!)

  13. I threw a vote to AGENTS OF ARTIFICE…but, truthfully, I think you should skip that one–and the follow-up–and go right for Stover’s TEST OF METAL. It’s amazing. I went back and read AoA after the fact, just to make sure I didn’t miss anything. I didn’t.

  14. I voted for DB O’Shea’s PENANCE, well, because it’s on my list and I think you’ll like it! Dan’s got a writing style that I find compelling and waaaayyy too realistic sometimes. Definitely worth a look!

Any book by Paul S. Kemp is a must read book. He has away of making his characters sit next to you as you read about their adventures.

  16. I pick Paul Kemp’s A Discourse in steel, the previous book The Hammer and the Blade was a [age turner for me and I’ve read it twice to get ready for discourse. I’m a long time fan of Mr. Kemp and really enjoy his writing and his skill at character development is quite commendable in my opinion.
